Rembrandt
rembrandt painted like he saw it
not the way that his patrons wanted;
and he didn't give a damn
when they got pissed off.
He just lectured them and scoffed.
chorus/he was a righteous man. yes, he was a righteous man.
and he knew the scriptures in his heart.
he kept them with him while everybody praised his art.
and he saw the shadows, and he showed the dark,
and for his honesty he lost it all.
chorus
"vanity, vanity", he would say,
and he knew it in the truest way.
he had to borrow for his brushes and his paint,
but he kept working until his dying day.
chorus
there's a picture by Rembrandt on a coffee can
I brought home from Amsterdam;
"the night watch", the one that caused his fall.
his truth still lives because he showed us what he saw.
